Dear Alberta friends, Do you know a current student or recent Alberta graduate who is interested in a paid part-time remote work-term ($20+/hour) starting January 2022 thru to May (end date is flexible) at the intersection of eCommerce, digital marketing, and software development? I can offer an engaging project and va

What is the status of schools this semester? Are the campuses open? How does coop work at the University of Calgary? Does the January start date fit into students' schedules?

Jeremy — Today at 9:57 AM
Sorry, are you advertising a job that you're hiring for? (edited)

beeboopbeep — Today at 9:58 AM
Yes
[9:59 AM]
The grant funding deadline is fast approaching (next Thursday) so if anyone is looking for a January opportunity please tell your friends. I've kind of neglected the software position posting because I really need a digital marketer/sales person to round out the team but you can think of it as equivalent to Google Summer of Code, but better in most respects except for the GSoC branding. (edited)
[10:01 AM]
But maybe some of you will have friends or classmates who are actively searching for opportunities. (edited)

Alex (she/her) — Today at 10:02 AM
We are all doing mix of online and in person classes, but campus itself is open. There will be students who are looking for a January start date for an internship

Jeremy — Today at 10:04 AM
And you're the hiring manager?  An employee?  Owner?  Recruiter?

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:04 AM
I am the owner.

Jeremy — Today at 10:04 AM
This site is...suspiciously lacking in details about what this site/company is

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:05 AM
It's an E-Commerce store, I'm not sure what you mean. (edited)

Jeremy — Today at 10:05 AM
The start of the "About Us" section:
The year is 2021. Privacy, marriage, and Kobe Bryant are dead.

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:06 AM
This is not a corporate gig if that's what you mean. Much more small business/grassroots effort.

xylo — Today at 10:06 AM
WHat niche are y'all going after? Jw

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:07 AM
People who value their privacy and security and want to run Linux on Mobile.

One of the "products" on your website is a "Maid Dress"
[10:08 AM]
Which I doubt any maid is actually going to wear
[10:08 AM]
...and it's sold out?

xylo — Today at 10:08 AM
The entire site is not owned by them I think, you'll see on the website the link is under /pages/jobs

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:08 AM
PinePhone is not for everyone.

xylo — Today at 10:08 AM
Oop, I was wrong

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:09 AM
I am owner, operator all of the above.

Jeremy — Today at 10:09 AM

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:09 AM
One of many stores and products we can sell.
[10:09 AM]
It's very much a startup, you will have enough rope to hang yourself but the sky is the limit.

xylo — Today at 10:10 AM
This is coming from a total place of ignorance, so pls be gentle with me:
 - Why use Linux? I get something like Kali Linux that offers a bunch of prebuilt solutions, but overall why would you want to use Linux (on desktop)
 - Whatever the reason is for above, why then do it on mobile?

Jeremy — Today at 10:10 AM
This site just looks very suspicious to me...

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:10 AM
I have to reach out to the Haskayne and U of A today so I won't be able to answer all of these questions, but there is a huge Pine64 community.
[10:11 AM]
I can fix the image/branding but we are more trustworthy and reputable than Android and iOS in some many respects.
[10:11 AM]
I mean part of the project could be overhauling the design/UX/branding but obviously we're targetting a niche.

Jeremy — Today at 10:11 AM
Your "About Us" page doesn't have an address or list anyone who is associated to this operation

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:12 AM
I realize it's the age of social media but I don't want random people messaging all of the time.
[10:13 AM]
Maybe discuss this with your friends, spread the word and see what other people think.

Jeremy — Today at 10:13 AM
I'm talking about it with my friends right now, we're all highly suspicious

Ethan (Petiole) — Today at 10:14 AM
sorry, but is your store directly associated with the Pine Store (ie, the job posting for the Pine Store rather than bitcompact) or is bitcompact a Pine64 device seller that is offering jobs?

Jeremy — Today at 10:14 AM
https://whois.domaintools.com/bitcompact.com

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:15 AM
No affiliation although we compete in some regards but the world is big enough for many resellers.
[10:16 AM]
I would like to start interviewing this weekend so submit an application if this sounds like something you'd be interested in
[10:17 AM]
Now I'm going to have serious problems selling this to the business students.
[10:17 AM]
If Jeremy doesn't get it.

Jeremy — Today at 10:17 AM
Just to check, the position would be a programming job, right?  I wouldn't have to sew any maid uniforms or 3d print any dental cards?

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:17 AM
The job is what you make of it.

xylo — Today at 10:17 AM
If you explained your exact offering, your source of funding, and the goal all in like a 30s thing, I think it would help a tonne

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:17 AM
What is 30s

@xylo

Alex (she/her) — Today at 10:17 AM
Is this related to the conversation, or to the bot?

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:17 AM
It's all there

xylo — Today at 10:17 AM
30 seconds

@beeboopbeep
The job is what you make of it.

Jeremy — Today at 10:18 AM
No, I was totally convinced when you described the job with you will have enough rope to hang yourself but the sky is the limit

Alex (she/her)
Is this related to the conversation, or to the bot?

xylo — Today at 10:18 AM
It's kinda seperate? Cause they were talking about Linux on phone, and how there's market for it

Your ability to write the next killer app will determine the fate of the ecosystem. We are literally building the future that we want to live in.

Jeremy — Today at 10:21 AM
I just want to make sure...you understand why this entire job/website is suspicious, right?

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:21 AM
I thought it was fine but I'm listening to the feedback.
[10:22 AM]
I don't have time to overhaul it because I have to reach out to U of A, SAIT, MRU now before end of the day.

xylo — Today at 10:22 AM
Why such a tight deadline?

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:22 AM
Grant funding deadline by Thursday.

Sunny — Today at 10:23 AM
What is your source of funding?

beeboopbeep — Today at 10:23 AM
Alberta Grant program, personal savings, it's entrepreneurship. I am creating jobs.
[10:23 AM]
It's all there on the website.......

Jeremy — Today at 10:23 AM
It certainly is
